The short answer
Timberline HDZ is worth considering when you want a dimensional shingle roof with a broad color selection and documented wind testing. Its larger nailing area helps installers place fasteners, while eligible complete GAF systems can receive a 15-year WindProven limited wind warranty. For a Broward home, the approved assembly, installation details and selected accessories deserve as much attention as the shingle itself.

A real M&M Timberline roof in Shakewood
The roof above and the detail below are from our Deerfield Beach shingle replacement. The documented materials are GAF Timberline in Shakewood over Polyglass Polystick IR-Xe underlayment. The exact Timberline sub-line is unconfirmed, so these photos illustrate the finished color and roof details without claiming this job is HDZ.

A close-up sample helps you see the granule blend. A full roof helps you judge how that blend repeats across a much larger surface. Compare both before choosing, especially if your trim, driveway or exterior paint is staying.
Which Timberline HDZ colors can you choose?
GAF's May 2026 national specification (opens in a new tab) lists 23 colors across two collections. High Definition offers the familiar shaded look; Bold Definition adds stronger contrasts within related neutral palettes. These are catalog choices, with regional availability. A color appearing here does not mean it is in stock for your South Florida delivery date.

Bring two or three full-size samples outside beside your wall and trim, then look again in sun and shade. Screens cannot reproduce every granule tone. Ask about matching ridge caps and any HOA color approval before placing the order. Our shingle color and sample guide also lets you compare manufacturers.
What do LayerLock and StrikeZone actually add?
HDZ is a laminated fiberglass-asphalt shingle. Its overlapping layers create depth across the roof. LayerLock (opens in a new tab) mechanically joins those layers, allowing GAF to provide the wider StrikeZone nailing area. Dura Grip is the sealing system that helps the shingles bond after installation.
For a homeowner, the useful feature is a clearly defined fastening target. It still takes correctly placed and driven nails, proper deck preparation and the approved installation pattern. A bigger target does not fix damaged plywood or an incorrectly assembled roof.
GAF currently lists UL 2218 Class 3 impact resistance for qualifying HDZ packages and a Class A fire listing. Check the Class 3 statement on the delivered packaging; it should not be assumed for an older roof. Impact classification is separate from wind testing, and GAF excludes hail damage from its limited warranty.
How strong is HDZ in the published wind test?
HDZ's specification lists ASTM D3161 Class F. The graph shows the three laboratory classes and highlights HDZ’s Class F rating.

GAF Timberline HDZ meets Class F
Class F is the highest of the three classifications shown. It uses a 110 mph laboratory test speed. The bars below show the test speed associated with each class.

Both articles use the same scale.
ASTM explains (opens in a new tab) that this fan test does not directly predict wind speeds on a building or measure structural uplift capacity. A Class F result is not a promise that a finished roof survives a hurricane of a particular speed. HDZ also carries ASTM D7158 Class H, a separate wind classification; it should not be combined with this graph into a higher score.
The public HDZ NOA does not give an allowable uplift pressure in pounds per square foot. That leaves no documented psf figure to plot here. The approved system and the roof's actual conditions remain the basis for the permit and installation.
Is Timberline HDZ approved for South Florida?
Miami-Dade County, Florida NOA 22-1221.04, expiring February 21, 2027 (opens in a new tab), expressly includes Timberline HDZ. It was approved September 7, 2023 and covers the product within its Florida High-Velocity Hurricane Zone conditions. Broward and Miami-Dade projects need the applicable local approval and a complete roof assembly.
This NOA covers a wood deck, limits mean roof height to 33 feet and calls for RAS 115 installation and flashing, plus its course-layout and fastening details. Its fire classification is addressed separately. Before permitting, check the current document against the exact product and manufacturing location. Our NOA and Florida approval guide explains where those details appear.
What do the HDZ warranties really cover?
WindProven (opens in a new tab) is a 15-year limited wind warranty with no maximum wind-speed cap for eligible systems. It requires qualifying GAF starter strips, roof-deck protection, ridge caps and either leak barrier or attic ventilation. Ask for each accessory by product name in your proposal. Mixing components may change eligibility even when each product has its own approval.
The 25-year StainGuard Plus limited algae warranty applies to properly marked packages and concerns blue-green algae discoloration. It is not a promise that a roof never needs cleaning. Lifetime manufacturing-defect coverage (opens in a new tab) has ownership, property and other conditions; it does not forecast how long the roof will last. Coverage changes over time, and workmanship is a separate question. Have the written product and installation warranties reviewed together.
Our take: judge the whole roof proposal
HDZ is a sensible candidate when you like its dimensional appearance, find a locally available color and want the GAF system options documented up front. Its fastening design and published ratings are useful reasons to consider it. They do not establish that it will outperform every other architectural shingle on every house.
Compare quotes using the same tear-off scope, decking allowance, underlayment, flashing, ventilation and cleanup. Then compare the shingle, color and exact warranty. Start with our Broward shingle-roof cost guide for budget context and the TAMKO Titan XT review for another documented option. A roof-specific estimate is what turns that shortlist into a practical choice.
Frequently asked questions
Is Timberline HDZ a good shingle for a Broward home?
It is a reasonable option to evaluate for a dimensional asphalt-shingle roof. It has published ASTM D3161 Class F and D7158 Class H wind classifications and a Miami-Dade approval that includes HDZ. Suitability still depends on the roof, approved assembly, fastening, underlayment and installation scope.
Does the 110 mph graph mean my roof is safe in a 110 mph hurricane?
No. The graph shows laboratory air speeds for ASTM D3161 test classes. It does not predict the wind speed a completed roof will survive, and it is separate from the building's design wind speed and the manufacturer's warranty.
Does every Timberline HDZ roof have an unlimited wind warranty?
No. GAF's 15-year WindProven limited wind warranty requires eligible LayerLock shingles plus qualifying GAF starter strips, roof-deck protection, ridge caps and either leak barrier or attic ventilation, installed as required. Ask for the exact warranty and accessory products in writing.
How much does a Timberline HDZ roof cost?
An installed price depends on the measured roof area, tear-off, decking repairs, underlayment, flashing, ventilation and warranty accessories. Compare quotes with the same scope and ask for the exact shingle and color by name. Our Broward shingle-roof cost guide provides general budget context; your roof needs a written estimate.
How many Timberline HDZ colors are available?
GAF's May 2026 national specification lists 23 colors: 19 High Definition colors and four Bold Definition colors. Some options are regional. Confirm the color, local availability and delivery timing before ordering, and compare full-size samples outside.
Is Timberline HDZ Class 3 or Class 4?
The current HDZ specification lists UL 2218 Class 3 only for products carrying the specified Class 3 package statement. Do not assume an older installation has that rating. Class 4 claims for other GAF lines, including qualifying UHDZ products, do not apply to HDZ; GAF does not warrant HDZ against hail damage.
