The short answer
Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration is an architectural shingle worth considering for a South Florida reroof. Its SureNail fabric strip guides nail placement, its current specifications list Class F wind and Class 3 impact resistance, and it has a Miami-Dade approval. The right choice still depends on your roof, the installation details and the complete system in your estimate.

Request up to three samples. We’ll confirm available colors, timing and any sample or delivery charges.
Start with your home's fixed colors: brick, stone, stucco, trim and driveway. Take two or three samples outdoors and compare them in sun and shade. A small screen swatch cannot reproduce the contrast across a whole sloped roof. Regional listings also do not guarantee local stock; confirm the exact color before ordering.
Use our shingle colors and sample request page to compare options from both manufacturers.
What makes Duration different?
Standard TruDefinition Duration is a laminated asphalt shingle: overlapping layers give the roof depth, while blended granules create its color. Its most distinctive construction feature is SureNail, a visible woven-fabric strip embedded across the nailing area. Where that strip overlaps the shingle's two layers, Owens Corning describes a reinforced three-layer fastening zone.
That is useful because nail placement and fastening affect how a shingle stays attached. A visible target helps the installer place fasteners consistently, but the strip cannot correct overdriven nails, damaged decking or the wrong fastening pattern. The current Jacksonville data sheet (opens in a new tab) also documents these classifications:
| Property | Listed classification | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Wind test | ASTM D3161 Class F | Fan-induced laboratory test; the chart below explains its scale. |
| Uplift classification | ASTM D7158 Class H | A different test method; keep it separate from the Class F graph. |
| Impact | UL 2218 and FM 4473 Class 3 | Laboratory classifications; hail damage is excluded from the product warranty. |
| Fire | ASTM E108 / UL 790 Class A | Manufacturer's fire listing; fire classification is outside the NOA. |
How strong is Duration in wind testing?
The clearest numerical comparison available here is the ASTM D3161 laboratory wind-test scale. Duration's listed Class F sits at the highest of the three classes shown. These bars explain the test classes; they are not three different Duration installation results.

Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration meets Class F

Both articles use the same scale.
The Miami-Dade approval does not supply an allowable uplift-pressure table for this shingle, so there is no NOA pressure value to chart. ASTM D7158 Class H is a separate classification. Neither test class should be converted into a promise that your finished roof will withstand a particular hurricane.
Is Duration approved for a Broward roof?
Yes, within the approved system's conditions. Miami-Dade County, Florida NOA 26-0331.12, expiring July 19, 2031 (opens in a new tab), includes standard TruDefinition Duration. Approved May 28, 2026, it covers the Florida Building Code's High-Velocity Hurricane Zone requirements for the described wood-deck roof system.
The NOA limits mean roof height to 33 feet and requires RAS 115 installation and flashing, with its specified layout and nailing details. The approval is one part of your permit package. Deck condition, underlayment, transitions and your roof's dimensions still need to fit the proposed assembly. Our NOA and Florida approval guide explains what to check.
What does the 160 mph warranty require?
The August 2026 standard warranty (opens in a new tab) lists 130 mph standard and 160 mph enhanced wind coverage for Duration. Both have a 15-year wind period measured from installation; wind coverage applies only after thermal sealing. The enhanced option requires a specified Owens Corning system:
- Duration shingles, Owens Corning starter on both eaves and rakes, and qualifying Owens Corning hip-and-ridge shingles.
- Qualifying underlayment plus the required Owens Corning self-adhered barrier or ventilation option. A qualifying full-deck Owens Corning self-adhered barrier can satisfy both underlayment and barrier requirements.
- Compliance with the Enhanced Wind Application Instructions, fastening requirements and applicable local code.
Ask for every qualifying product in writing. Another brand's underlayment should not be assumed to meet these conditions. The wind remedy is limited; it is not a promise to rebuild a storm-damaged home.
For eligible owner-occupied single-family detached homes, the standard product-defect warranty has a 10-year TRU PROtection period before prorated coverage. It excludes tear-off/disposal and installation mistakes. The advertised 25-year algae coverage also requires qualifying ridge shingles; otherwise the term drops to 10 years. Read the applicable warranty (opens in a new tab) alongside the contractor's separate workmanship terms.
Is Duration the right choice for your roof?
Duration makes sense to consider when you want a dimensional shingle with a clearly marked reinforced nail zone, a broad local color selection and documented approval. Its Class 3 impact rating is useful information, but standard Duration is a different product from the Class 4 Duration STORM and FLEX lines. Choose the exact product that meets your priorities.
Compare complete estimates: removal, wood repairs, underlayment, flashing, ventilation, accessories and permit work. If a quote substitutes components, ask how that affects both the approved assembly and warranty. For budgeting, our Broward shingle roof cost guide gives general project context; a Duration-specific price needs your roof's measurements and scope.

Frequently asked questions
Is Owens Corning Duration a good shingle for South Florida?
It is a credible architectural-shingle option with a reinforced nail area, documented wind and impact classifications and a current Miami-Dade approval. Its suitability depends on the approved roof assembly, mean roof height, installation and the scope of your reroof. A brand name alone cannot establish storm performance.
Which Duration colors are available around Fort Lauderdale?
The manufacturer displayed 14 colors for ZIP 33302 on October 17, 2026: Amber, Antique Silver, Brownwood, Chateau Green, Desert Rose, Driftwood, Estate Gray, Harbor Blue, Midnight Plum, Onyx Black, Quarry Gray, Teak, Terra Cotta and Williamsburg Gray. Confirm current local supply and approve a physical sample before ordering.
Does Duration have a 130 mph or a 160 mph wind warranty?
The August 2026 standard warranty lists 130 mph for Duration and an enhanced 160 mph option for a qualifying Owens Corning component system installed under the enhanced instructions. Both have a 15-year wind period measured from installation; wind coverage applies only after thermal sealing. The exact accessories and conditions belong in your written scope.
Is standard Duration a Class 4 shingle?
No. The current standard TruDefinition Duration data sheet lists UL 2218 and FM 4473 Class 3 impact resistance. Duration STORM and Duration FLEX are separate products; their ratings should not be assigned to standard Duration. Laboratory impact classification does not promise protection from every hailstorm.
What does the 110 mph graph mean?
It shows the laboratory airflow velocity associated with ASTM D3161 Class F, the class listed for Duration. It is neither your home's code design wind speed nor the shingle's warranty limit. It also does not identify the speed at which a completed roof will fail.
Are the Duration roof pictures M&M installations?
The Amber roof shown here is an Owens Corning manufacturer reference. It illustrates the color and appearance; it is not presented as an M&M installation. Our GAF Timberline review includes verified M&M shingle project photographs.
